You are here:

Aelbert Cuyp was born in 1620 in Dordrecht, the Netherlands, and became one of the most admired landscape painters of the Dutch Golden Age. He trained with his father, Jacob Gerritsz. Cuyp, before developing his own distinctive style. Cuyp is best known for his warm, golden light and serene views of the Dutch countryside. His paintings often feature cattle, rivers, and expansive skies bathed in soft atmosphere.

He combined careful observation with an idealized sense of calm and balance. Cuyp’s landscapes convey a peaceful harmony between people, animals, and nature. Although successful during his early career, he later reduced his artistic activity after marriage. In the 18th and 19th centuries, his work gained particular popularity in England. Aelbert Cuyp died in 1691. Today, he is celebrated for his luminous pastoral scenes and lasting influence on European landscape painting.
