Alfred Thompson Bricher was born in 1837 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and became a prominent American landscape painter of the 19th century. He is closely associated with the Hudson River School and its later offshoot, Luminism. Bricher is best known for his serene coastal scenes, rocky shorelines, and quiet views of New England and the northeastern United States. His paintings emphasize clarity, calm light, and careful detail.

Bricher began his career working in a commercial art firm before turning fully to landscape painting. He traveled widely along the American coast, drawing inspiration from Maine, Massachusetts, and Long Island. His work reflects a contemplative approach to nature rather than dramatic spectacle. Bricher enjoyed considerable success during his lifetime and exhibited widely. He died in 1908. Today, his paintings are valued for their peaceful atmosphere and refined portrayal of the American landscape.
