Achille-Émile Othon Friesz
Achille-Émile Othon Friesz was born in 1879 in Le Havre, France, and became an important painter associated with Fauvism. He trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and was part of the circle that included Henri Matisse and Georges Braque. Friesz embraced bold color and simplified form, using expressive brushwork to convey structure and emotion. His work often focuses on landscapes, city views, and the human figure.
Unlike some Fauves, Friesz maintained a strong sense of composition and classical balance. Over time, his style evolved toward a more controlled and architectural approach. He was deeply influenced by Cézanne, seeking order beneath expressive color. Friesz also worked as a teacher, shaping younger generations of artists. He remained active throughout his long career. Friesz died in 1949. His paintings reflect a thoughtful balance between Fauvist freedom and classical discipline.
