Juan Gris

You are here:

Juan Gris was born in Madrid in 1887 and became one of the most important painters of Cubism. He moved to Paris in 1906, where he joined the circle of avant-garde artists working around Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Gris brought a refined, intellectual approach to Cubism, emphasizing clarity, structure, and harmony. His compositions are carefully balanced and often built from interlocking geometric forms.

Unlike the more experimental early Cubists, Gris favored precise design and strong color relationships. His paintings frequently depict still lifes, musical instruments, and everyday objects. Gris also wrote about art, contributing to the theoretical development of Cubism. Despite ongoing health problems, he remained highly productive. Juan Gris died in 1927 at the age of 40. His work is admired for its elegance, order, and lasting influence on modern art.
