Thomas Gainsborough was born in 1727 in Sudbury, England, and became one of the leading portrait and landscape painters of 18th-century Britain. He trained in London and was influenced by Dutch landscape traditions as well as French Rococo elegance. Gainsborough is especially celebrated for his graceful portraits of aristocrats and wealthy patrons. His paintings combine refinement with a natural, fluid brushwork.

In addition to portraiture, Gainsborough had a lifelong passion for landscape painting. He often blended figures and countryside settings, creating harmonious compositions. His use of light, soft color, and sweeping lines gives his work a sense of vitality and charm. Gainsborough was a founding member of the Royal Academy, though he maintained an independent spirit. He died in 1788. Today, he is regarded as one of the greatest British artists, admired for both his portraits and lyrical landscapes.
